Important Information about WASL Support Classes:
July 7 through July
31, 2008
What are the current requirements for passing the WASL and graduating?
Lawmakers recently changed the WASL graduation requirement for students graduating in 2008-2012. Students are still required to pass the reading and writing WASL, a state-approved alternative to the WASL, or an assessment for students in special education in order to receive a Washington State Diploma. Students must also meet the state's math requirement by:
- passing the math WASL, a state approved alternative or an assessment for students in special education, OR,
- continue to earn one math credit per year until graduation, and take the WASL at least once per year
Certificate of Academic Achievement
Students who pass the reading, writing and math assessments earn a Certificate of Academic Achievement or Certificate of Individual Achievement and a high school diploma. The Certificate of Academic Achievement is noted on the student's transcript. Students who fulfill the math requirement by earning math credits (because they did not pass the math WASL) do not receive a certificate but do earn a high school diploma.
Why are we offering WASL support classes in addition to regular summer school classes?
The purpose of the WASL support classes is to assist students in their development of reading, math, and/or writing skills necessary to meet standard on the WASL. The focus will be on thinking and communicating using WASL-like prompts and questions in order to help students understand math concepts and become better prepared to retake the math, reading or writing WASL.
Who should attend these classes?
Any student who did not meet standard on a section of the WASL and who believes that a summer school course in that subject area will help prepare them for the retake opportunity in August should take the class. The classes are especially designed for students who scored at a level 2 (below standard) in that subject area.
Should I take the WASL class if I'm behind in credits?
Students who are behind in credits should enroll in the credit recovery classes offered as part of the regular summer school session instead of the WASL class.
How much do the support classes cost?
There is no fee for the support classes; however, students must register by June 22 in order to enroll.
Will credit be given for the classes?
Yes, this year students can earn .5 MATH credit for successfully completing all assigned work and meeting attendance requirements in the math class. Students can earn .5 ENGLISH credit for completing both the reading and writing classes.
How do I register for WASL Support Classes?
Students may register by filling out a registration form and then turning the form in to their high school counselor. Counselors will forward the form to the Summer School Office by district mail.
When do I take the WASL and how do I register?
Students must pre-register to take the WASL by June 22, 2008 in order to take the WASL in August 2008. To pre-register, call 1-866-400-WASL or visit
